Metal Complexes of the Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Piroxicam Synthesis, characterization and thermal behaviour of the complex with Cu(II)

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of the copper (II) complex with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) piroxicam. The characterization was performed by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and thermal investigation. The empirical formulae of the complex, [Cu(PX)2(H2O)2]’ . H2O was determined by the mentioned methods, but especially by elemental and thermal analysis. From the FT-IR spectra and X-ray diffractograms was established that the piroxicam, acts as monoanionic chelating ligand, through the amide oxygen and the pyridyl nitrogen atoms. The thermal behaviour of the complex was studied by simultaneous TG/DTG/DTA methods, under non-isothermal conditions and in a dynamic air atmosphere. According to the thermal curves, especially TG curve, the complex contains two molecules of coordination water and one molecule of crystallization water, respectively. On further heating of the anhydrous compound up to 1036 °C the thermal degradation of the piroxicam and the intermediate formed took place. Metallic copper was found as the final product of the thermal decomposition.
